I always find fairgrounds to be full of joy and yet somehow a bit depressing. I think that strange dichotomy is probably why I like them. Well, that and the wealth of visual delights in the form of hand-painted lettering, bad portraiture, oddly dated pop culture references, and people-watching.
Yesterday was a bank holiday, and blessed with blue skies, so I wandered up to the funfair at Hampstead Heath to take some photos. I still need to go through most of them, but I uploaded a few via Instagram. I know lots of people don't like the fake-vintageness of apps like this one, but as funfairs always seem to be stuck in a kind of over-saturated and shabby timewarp, I find some of processing can capture that ambience better than a straight-foward snap from my phone can. (Annoyingly there's no way to link directly to an Instagram account, but on the plus side I can simultaneously upload to Flickr — and in less time than it takes with any other app. If you want to find me on Instagram, my username is mondoagogo, natch.)
Anyway, here are some photos from a sunny day at the funfair.
More photos (not taken on my phone) will be posted here when I've got around to uploading them!
